Banna Chluain Meala
Marching to our own rythmn
Purmerade Festival, Netherlands
Foreign travel was an essential part of the philosophy of Banna Chluain Meala from the early years and in 1974, just three years after its foundation, the band was invited to a major European music festival in The Netherlands.
The ‘Purmerade’ festival took place every four years in the Dutch city of Purmerend. The aim of the Purmerade was to bring young musicians together to promote international contact between them. Situated around 20km north of Amsterdam, Purmerend grew rapidly from the 1960’s and today has a population in excess of 80,000. Banna Chluain Meala’s deep association with the festival began in 1974 and was renewed every four years until 2002. Most of those who were members of the band during these years will fondly remember it as a highlight of their time with Banna Chluain Meala.
The festival was an invitation only event with some of the finest European and North American bands taking part each time. It was an ideal way for Banna to perform with and learn from some of the best ensembles around.
All band members were accommodated free of charge with host families in one area, just outside of Purmerend. Zuidoostbeemster became the place where many enduring friendships began. It was in the family homes of this town that many young people from Clonmel experienced a slice of Dutch family life and culture. We are sincerely grateful to the local organising committee in Zuidoostbeemster, led by the late Co Cramer and his wife, Lise, who found accommodation for all the band members over the years.
The demands of being at the festival meant that the bands would perform in competitive concert and marching events, as well as fulfil more relaxed engagements, playing at various local landmarks and tourist spots.
A very young and inexperienced band made the first trip in 1974 and as it was by invitation only and we were fortunate to be invited to all subsequent festivals which sadly, ended in 2002. We made one final private visit in 2007.
